This course will address the multiple histories of photography from its invention through its artistic, scientific, and social development as the primary deliverer of visual culture. We will engage in a thematic investigation of the practice of photography as a reflection of the cultures within which it operates. Anthropological, documentary, journalistic, scientific, artistic, and vernacular practices will all be examined. You will be introduced to the prominent photographic figures from the early 19th century through current contemporary practitioners. Additionally, in this course, you will become familiar with the pictorial language of the photographic image as well as the technological progression of the medium.
